What are we about in 2008?
Year in your life Vision Quest
Straight up this is what the year looks like for us. In Matthew, Jesus asks the disciples, “Who do you say I am”. We then learn that Peter was given a revelation from the Father about who Jesus is and then Jesus turns right around and tell Peter who he is. We have been inspired by these verses to build a year with the primary goal of
- Who is God?
- Who am I?
The story continues when Jesus after telling Peter who he was then says “Upon this, (knowing who God is and knowing who you are) I will build my church”. We find here that the purpose of knowing God and knowing who you are is for the building of His body. With that we will look this year to three aspects of a mans life in a Vision Quest year.
- Orienting yourself to God to be Fathered by Him
- Its only in the deeper reality of God that we can know who we truly are. That we have identity and a glory to us.
- What is our calling regarding this revelation. God is about a building and what does that look like in my life.
If in fact God is very much about these three themes in our lives we find this is where the enemy will attempt to confound your life.
- The enemies first attempt is to confuse you as to who God is by using all the wounds and disappointments of your life to give you the idea that God is really a weak. The enemy’s first line of assault is to have you believe the Fathers heart is not good towards you.
- Satan’s next line of attack is to keep hidden your name, your identity, your glory. We have found with working with men that the problem is not so much sin in their lives or that their spiritual pursuits are inadequate but rather most men don’t truly know who they are as sons of God. Because we don’t know who we are we don’t access from God all that is available to us. Primarily His Life.
- If God is about a building (and this is where the gates of hell will not prevail, so let’s say this is really important here!) then the enemy’s goal is to isolate you. Is this not what so many 21st century American men feel; isolated.
What we believe is the primary goal of God in your Life.
“On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man whose right hand was withered. The scribes and Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on the Sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him. But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, “Come up and stand before us.” And he rose and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?” Looking around at them all (This must have been an intense moment) he then said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so and his hand was restored. But they became enraged and discuss together what they might do to Jesus.” (Luke 6:6-11)
In this passage we have a man sitting in the synagogue with a withered right hand. We believe the right hand indicated the man’s strength, his functional and producing hand. He sits unable to accomplish his dreams and desires and might of have given up hope at this point. The man is largely passive in this story; he is just sitting there and never even asks to be healed.
Passivity is the sin passed down to us from Adam. We all have to admit it men, it has dominated so much of our lives. We have a man sitting there not even knowing the right questions to ask and unaware that a healer was in the room. We then see Jesus call this man out to do something he desires to do in all our lives. He restores this mans right hand giving him back his strength. This is so beautiful.
Jesus is about making us whole. It is this where we see His primary work. In the Pharisees we see men caught up in a religious system more concerned with there interpretation of the law then the concern to make this man whole. These men would rather just keep things the way they are.
Jesus is the great disrupter. Jesus goes right into the chaos of this synagogue to show us His heart. His intension is to make us whole, His heart is good toward us and He is always about this in our life. Wholeness is His desire for us.
